Basil Essential Oil is distilled from the flowers and leaves of the Ocimum basilicum plant. The cultivar, country of origin and growing conditions make significant differences to the chemical makeup of the extracted oil resulting in different chemotypes (CT). Ocimum basilicum ct. Methyl Chavicol contains high levels of Methyl Chavicol, also known as Estragole. Care should therefore be taken in its use as although not toxic itself, Estragole may convert to a chemical which is hepatoxic and could be carcinogenic in prolonged and/or high dose use. For general use, especially if used directly on the skin, we recommend Sweet Basil.
